Most people learn tick prevention from information about the black-legged tick: stand still in vegetation, quest on a grass blade, wait for a host. The lone star tick does not behave this way. It runs actively toward movement and body heat, which means the passive awareness that works in the Northeast is not enough in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Active season and habitat
Adult lone star ticks are active from March through August; nymphs (the stage most likely to be missed on a tick check because of their small size) peak in June and July. The highest-density habitat is the wooded buffer zone at the edge of managed lawns — particularly anywhere with deer trails, since deer are the primary large-mammal host for adult females. Palmetto Islands County Park, Boone Hall Plantation grounds, and the wooded edges of neighborhoods backing to marsh all have established populations.
Protective steps that actually work
Permethrin-treated clothing is the single most effective personal protection for anyone spending time in tick habitat. Permethrin bonds to fabric fibers and remains active through multiple washes; it is applied to clothing and gear before wear, not to skin. DEET (30%) or picaridin-based repellents applied to exposed skin add a second layer of protection. Tuck pants into socks and wear light-colored clothing so ticks are visible against the fabric.
After outdoor time in tick habitat, a full-body tick check within two hours is critical. Nymphs are poppy-seed sized and easily missed in the hairline, behind the ears, in the groin, and behind the knees. Showering within two hours of outdoor exposure rinses off unattached ticks.
After a bite
Remove the tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, grasping close to the skin and pulling upward with steady pressure. Do not twist, crush, or use heat or petroleum products. The alpha-gal allergy associated with lone star ticks can develop after even a single bite and may not present symptoms for weeks or months. If you develop new-onset sensitivity to mammalian meat (beef, pork, lamb) after a tick bite, discuss alpha-gal syndrome with a physician. Ehrlichiosis from a lone star tick bite presents with fever, headache, and muscle aches within two weeks; if you develop these symptoms after a tick bite, seek care promptly.
