South Carolina has several stinging insect species that nest near structures, and the appropriate response to each is different. Getting it wrong means either an unnecessary professional expense for a manageable problem or a dangerous DIY attempt at something that should not have been approached without protective gear and the right product.
Paper wasps: the manageable case
Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests with visible hexagonal cells, usually on a single horizontal surface under an eave, behind a shutter, or inside a grill. In spring when the nest is small (one tier, fewer than 20 cells), a wasp freeze spray applied at night when wasps are torpid is usually sufficient. The risk is manageable because the nest is open and accessible, the workers are not aggressive until late summer, and the colony can be knocked down before it grows to its late-summer size of 100-200 workers.
Yellowjackets in the ground or a wall void: call a professional
Yellowjackets in South Carolina peak in late summer with colonies that can reach 5,000 workers. A colony in a ground nest or, more problematically, inside a wall void is not accessible with consumer spray products, which cannot penetrate to the core of the nest. Disturbing a wall-void nest from the outside without treating the entire cavity causes workers to migrate deeper into the structure and can drive them through wall gaps into living space. A licensed operator uses residual dust injected directly into the entry point and can assess whether the nest requires removal after treatment or can be left to desiccate.
Mud daubers: leave them
Mud daubers (Sceliphron caementarium) build the clay tubes you see on exterior walls, under eaves, and in carports. They are solitary, carry no capacity for mass stinging, and their larvae parasitize spiders — including brown widow spiders. Removing active mud dauber tubes removes a beneficial predator. They are one of the few stinging insects that are best left alone unless their nesting location is truly problematic.
