South Carolina requires pest control operators to hold a license issued by the South Carolina Department of Pesticide Regulation. That requirement sets a minimum standard, but it does not distinguish between operators that provide thorough, professional service and those that do not. Here is how to evaluate the difference before you sign anything.
Verify SCDPR licensing
Ask for the operator's SCDPR license number and category. A general pest license covers common household insects and rodents; a termite endorsement is required for subterranean termite treatment. The SCDPR license database is publicly searchable — you can confirm that the license is current and that the category covers the service being proposed. An operator that cannot or will not provide their license number is a red flag.
Confirm insurance
A licensed pest control operator should carry general liability insurance that covers damage to your property resulting from their application. Ask for a certificate of insurance before the first visit. This is standard practice for any licensed contractor and a straightforward request. An operator that hedges or deflects on insurance documentation should not be in your home.
Read the contract before signing
Quarterly service contracts vary significantly. The four things to verify before signing: which pests are covered (ask specifically about termites, bed bugs, and wildlife — most general plans exclude all three); what the callback policy is (free return for covered pests between scheduled visits, or a service call charge); what the cancellation terms are (notice required, fees, annual versus month-to-month); and whether the initial visit is billed separately from the quarterly rate.
Ask how they handle SC-specific conditions
A pest control operator who is calibrated to South Carolina conditions should be able to speak specifically about Formosan termite swarmer season, CL-100 inspection requirements, the two-step fire ant management approach recommended by Clemson Cooperative Extension, and salt marsh mosquito behavior versus Asian tiger mosquito behavior. Operators who answer these questions specifically are demonstrating local expertise. Those who give generic national-program answers are not.
