Formosan subterranean termites (Coptotermes formosanus) arrived in the port cities of the Gulf Coast and Southeast in the mid-20th century and have established permanent populations throughout the South Carolina coastal plain. In the Charleston area — including Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and the barrier islands — Formosan termites are not a rare event. They are a routine structural risk that every homeowner should understand.
Colony size and damage rate
A mature Eastern subterranean termite colony contains 100,000-300,000 workers and forages slowly enough that a conventional annual inspection program gives adequate warning. A mature Formosan colony contains 1-8 million workers and forages at a rate that can produce structurally significant damage in 3-6 months. That difference in scale means the conventional "call if you see swarmers" approach is insufficient for Formosan-endemic areas. Structures in Mount Pleasant should be under active termite monitoring, not reactive inspection.
How to identify Formosan swarmers
Formosan swarmers are caramel or yellowish-brown, approximately half an inch long with wings. They swarm at dusk — typically starting 30-45 minutes after sunset — from late April through June, concentrated around outdoor lights. They are present in large numbers when a colony swarms; a handful of swarmers around a single light is not characteristic. Finding shed wings on a windowsill indoors, especially on the interior side of a window, means a swarm event occurred at that window and a colony is nearby.
Treatment options for Formosan termites
Liquid soil treatment (termiticide barrier around the foundation and under the slab) provides an immediate chemical barrier. Bait station programs work more slowly — workers must find and recruit to the bait, which can take 3-6 months for a large Formosan colony — but eliminate the colony rather than establishing a chemical barrier that requires periodic renewal. For Formosan termites specifically, liquid barrier treatment with a bait monitoring program is often the combined approach that SCDPR-licensed operators recommend for structures in the Charleston area.
