Bed bugs do not fly or jump. They transfer from an infested location to your luggage, clothing, or personal items and ride home with you. The Charleston area's active hospitality market — hotels, Airbnb properties, vacation rentals on Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, and short-term furnished corporate housing in North Charleston — creates significant introduction risk for Mount Pleasant residents who travel or host guests.
How to inspect a hotel room
Before unpacking, place luggage in the bathroom or bathtub — not on the floor or the luggage rack, which are harborage sites. Pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams on all four sides: you are looking for blood staining, dark fecal spotting, or live insects. Check the box spring if accessible. Inspect the upholstered headboard seams. The whole inspection takes three minutes. If you find evidence, request a different room on a different floor, not an adjacent room.
What to do when you return home
Unpack luggage in the garage or on a hard-surface floor (not carpet, not upholstered furniture). Bag all clothing immediately and run it through a dryer on high heat for 30 minutes before or instead of washing — heat kills all life stages; cold water washing does not. Hard-sided luggage can be inspected and wiped down; soft-sided luggage should be stored sealed in a large plastic bag if you are in a high-introduction-risk environment.
When guests stay with you
Short-term rental guests and visitors from out of town can introduce bed bugs unknowingly. After a guest stay, inspect the guest room mattress seams before the next use. A plastic mattress encasement on the guest bed significantly reduces harborage opportunities and makes inspection easier. If a guest reports bites after their stay, a professional inspection before the room is used again is appropriate.
When to call for an inspection
If you develop unexplained bites concentrated on exposed skin after travel or after a guest stay, and you find any of the physical signs (staining, fecal spotting, shed skins), call a SCDPR-licensed bed bug specialist for an inspection. The window between introduction and establishment is the cheapest time to treat. A single-room inspection and early-stage treatment costs significantly less than a whole-house protocol for a multi-room infestation.
